PTFE Lined Steam Header : Working Principle & Safety

A steam header looks simple from outside: one inlet, several outlets, and an arrangement of isolation valves. Inside a plant, however, it performs an important distribution function. Every branch needs steam at an acceptable pressure and quality, while condensate must be removed before it causes trouble. When an enquiry specifies a PTFE lined steam header and distribution manifold, engineers should first establish why the lining is requested.

What does a steam header do?

A steam header receives steam from a boiler or upstream main and distributes it to equipment through separate branches. Branch connections are normally taken from the top, helping reduce the amount of condensate carried into users. A properly designed header also provides low-point drainage, steam trapping, pressure-rated connections, and allowance for thermal expansion.

Spirax Sarco notes that boiler headers can provide a moisture-separation function when sized for low steam velocity. Those principles matter far more than the number of connections shown on a general arrangement drawing.

Where does PTFE lining fit?

PTFE, or polytetrafluoroethylene, is a fluoropolymer used to protect metal piping from many corrosive process fluids. A lined assembly normally has a steel pressure-containing shell and a non-metallic, corrosion-resistant inner surface. The steel carries structural loads; the liner contacts the process medium.

This combination is valuable in selected chemical duties. It is not automatically advantageous for clean steam. Steam service introduces pressure, heat, thermal cycling, permeation, and condensate-related stresses that require a separate suitability assessment.

Can PTFE lining carry steam?

Possibly, in a specifically qualified application, but the answer cannot be inferred from a resin's published maximum temperature. At elevated temperature, PTFE becomes mechanically less resistant to deformation, expands differently from steel, and may permit vapor permeation. Frequent heating and cooling can challenge the lining and flared sealing faces.

CRP, a specialist lined-piping manufacturer, explains that practical lined-system temperature limits can be much lower than laboratory polymer values. ASTM F1545 addresses plastic-lined ferrous piping and qualification testing, including steam-cold-water cycling, but compliance is not blanket approval for every steam pressure, temperature, or operating pattern.

A better first engineering question

Determine whether steam flows inside the lined bore or through a separate outer heating jacket. In a jacketed system, steam typically heats the outside of the process pipe, while corrosive liquid passes through the PTFE-lined inner bore. These are fundamentally different duties and require separate design calculations.

If the project concerns steam distribution alone, carbon steel or appropriate alloy piping may be more conventional and economical. If corrosive process media require PTFE protection, describe those media and their exact contact surfaces rather than describing the entire assembly simply as a steam header.

Information to confirm before purchase

Specify the fluid in each passage, design and operating pressures, maximum and minimum temperatures, branch sizes, steam flow, start-stop frequency, and condensate-drain arrangement. Ask for a manufacturer-approved pressure-temperature envelope covering the complete lined assembly, including branch connections and flared ends.

The technical review should also address vacuum during shutdown, venting behind the liner, potential condensate accumulation, joint bolt loads, and thermal expansion. A drawing without these details is only a layout, not a service qualification.

How should this appear in a product catalogue?

Describe the unit by its actual service. A metallic steam header can be listed under steam distribution equipment; a PTFE-lined manifold carrying corrosive liquid belongs under lined process piping. If the manifold is jacketed, state which passage contains heating steam and which contains product. This distinction helps procurement teams compare like-for-like offers. Ask for drawings and limitations before publishing capacity or temperature claims.

Conclusion

A PTFE lined steam header and distribution manifold should never be selected on terminology alone. First verify the actual process duty; then assess whether the lining is required, suitable, and independently qualified. Sound steam distribution begins with correct piping design and safe condensate management.
